Happy Martyrs’ Day Uganda and everyone around the World.
Today June 3rd we celebrate the Uganda Martyrs who gave their lives because they believed in and stood for something. The Uganda Martyrs represent a group of 23 Anglican and 22 Catholic converts to Christianity in the historical kingdom of Buganda, these were mainly subjects in the service of the kingdom of Buganda under Kabaka Mwanga and were executed between 31 January 1885 and 27 January 1887. They were killed on the orders of King following a series of protracted events including political power struggles.
Much as June third is the official day / holiday , these Martyrs were from the Christian ( Catholics and Anglicans / Protestants) and also the Islamic faith and there are many memeorials / shrines that have been built in their honor. The main attractions though is the Catholic Shrine and the Anglican Shrine – Uganda Martyrs Museum.
Every year hundreds of thousands of pilgrims flock to Namugongo from all over the world as a religious pilgrimage. Among these pilgrims are those that walked hundreds of miles from the various regions of Uganda as well as from the neighboring countries of Kenya and Tanzania. These places have become hotspots for religious tourism as visitors get to hear more about the story of the Uganda martyrs, what they went through and what there actions and death symbolize.
So, as we celebrate and remember the Uganda Martyrs, I have a question I would like each one of us to ponder upon and answer individually….
There is a saying that if you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything. So, What do you stand for?
Standing for something involves knowing who you are and knowing your purpose in life, what are those principles , values and beliefs you are unwilling to compromise and will risk all to uphold and defend?
Is it integrity , truth or honesty?
Is it compassion, love or kindness?
Is it tolerance, equality and /or respect for others ?
Is it Positivity and Optimism ?
Is it trustworthiness, dependability and reliability?
Please reflect on this question and look within yourself …… you will find the answer there. Remember to stay true to yourself.
